Whether a skin disorder is cosmetically embarrassing or physically uncomfortable, those who suffer from them know that the only thing they desire is relief. Some conditions are caused by reactions, such as may occur when the individual has an allergy to a particular cologne or lotion with perfume in it. Others are genetic, and yet others are caused by aging or damage from the environment. These are some of the most common skin conditions, and some of the treatments available for them.
Wrinkles
Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. Sun damage and exposure to cigarette smoke can cause increased wrinkling. There is no cure for wrinkles, but they can be treated with several options, including:
Acne
Acne Vulgaris is a condition commonly called "pimples." Most people have pimples or acne occasionally, but some individuals have tremendous problems with the unsightly pustules. The pustules are caused by oil and dead skin cells clogging the pores of the skin. Bacteria and white blood cells also gather in the pores, causing the inflammation.
Eczema
Atopic dermatitis, otherwise known as eczema, is a skin condition that causes itchy, inflamed, red areas on the skin. These can sometimes become inflamed and ooze a bit. Eczema is very common in children, but can affect people of any age and seems to be linked to asthma and allergies. Treatment includes reducing the triggers, moisturizing the skin, and topical steroid creams. Hand eczema is a type of eczema that affects the hands and is caused by contact with irritants, including common hand soaps.
Fungal Infections
Fungal skin infections include any condition caused by a fungus. Athlete's foot, ringworm, and jock itch are common examples. Fungal skin infections cause itching, peeling of the skin, and red patches. They are treated with anti-fungal creams.
Fingernail Diseases
The fingernails can harbor bacteria and fungi. When they do, the individual develops conditions such as paronychia, an infection of the nail fold, and nail fungus. Treatment for nail problems begins with finding the cause and then eliminating it.
Pigmentation Disorders
Sometimes the skin does not pigment as it should. This can cause the individual to show light patches on dark skin or dark patches on light skin. Sometimes the skin does not tan when exposed to sunlight. Pigmentation disorders are typically genetic. Treatable pigmentation disorders are treated with laser surgery.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes patches of thick, red skin that are covered with scales. They typically show up on the knees scalp, elbows, face, palms, and feet. Sometimes they cause itching and pain, and the condition is caused by an overactive immune system. It can be treated with creams, ultraviolet light therapy, and internal medications.
Rosacea
Rosacea is characterized by flushing of the facial skin sometimes accompanied by acne. When left untreated, the condition can cause the nose to become larger due to excess tissue, a condition known as Rhynophyma. Rosacea usually affects people who are over the age of 30 and can be treated through laser treatment, oral, and topical medications.
Allergies
Allergies can cause skin conditions. Some skin conditions are caused by contact allergies, which means that contact with a (perfume) or other substance causes the skin to become inflamed. Sometimes skin conditions, particularly rashes and eczema, can be caused by drug allergies. The treatment for allergic reactions is to remove the allergen, if possible.
Cosmetic Treatments for Skin Conditions
Wrinkles, acne, scars, and pockmarks are all cosmetic skin conditions that send many people looking for treatment. While these do not cause physical damage, they can cause emotional damage, and as a result a variety of treatments are available, including:
