Donald Bauchner and his wife Gun sought to establish a new kind of fragrance company that could give customers the option to pick which perfume oils they wanted in a scent. The couple formed the Perfumers Workshop in 1971 and gave control to the consumers.

The company opened counters in Bloomingdale’s department stores and established boutiques around Europe. A fully formed fragrance was released in 1977 and became an immediate bestseller.
