In the first half of the 20th century, French fashion designer Pierre Balmain was known for designing women's clothing that ranged from the tastefully understated to the lavishly luxurious. He also designed costumes for movies and stage productions, winning a Drama Desk award and being nominated for a Tony.

Old School and elegant
Classic in style, pretty , easy to wear and chic too. This is one I reach for on days when I have no particular perfume mood. It is a fallback, but I mean this in a good way! I adore the violet topnotes, and then it settles into a nice warm and comforting familiar old school leather - moss feel a little like Cabochard but with the sweet violets opening. Old lady style? sure, but an elegant and chic old dame in a cashmere suit. :)Perfect for daytime, office, and business meetings.

my mums favorite fragrance
My mother is 90 years old and has dementia. She had no perfume but remembered that she used to wear some most days. she asked me to buy her some and I looked around for suitable light fragrances perhaps by Arden. Then I remembered she used to always wear Jolie Madame when I was a child and it reminded me of those days. So I bought her a bottle. Sadly she couldn't remember it but I told her how she used to love it. I am loving smelling that fabulous woody yet floral fragrance again.

A trusted fragrence
I have been using Jolie Madame since I was in my 20's over 40 years now. I fell in love with this the first time I smelled the fragerance. They don't seem to carry it in the US and Canada anymore. It was once carried by Revlon. It is a true vintage parfume and a keeper please keep it in your line.

Don't be carried away by the name!
Don't be affected by the stunning reviews. This perfume smells very masculine and is far away from what a sweet lady (Jolie Madame) would wear nowadays. It's heavy even for my mom (65 y.old). It's quite outdated and absolutely unsuitable for women who are into floral or gourmant perfumes. Be careful.

I love Balmain de Balmain but this...
I received this some weeks ago and only sprayed it last night and can I tell you how bad it was, it really had the scent of old perfume gone off. I am not the type to ever complain, but this is my first in all the 5 or 7 years that I have purchased from you. The bottle was not identical as the 'view image' probably, I thought, just the prior bottle design - but that did not bother me but I wouldn't even leave it in the bathroom area of how bad it was. This has never happened before, all these years all my perfumes from FragranceX have been amazing in everyway, I tell all my friends that you are the BEST and YOU ARE. Just one of those things in life - oh well! ouch! It did hurt writing this review.

Re-invented French classic
I first smelt this on a friend in france in 1977 and was impressed by her sophistication. Recently I wanted to try it myself. The new formulation is lighter and less pungent than the older one, but I managed to pick up a vintage bottle on an auction site after buying new here and found they are quite similar once they fade down. It has grown on me since I started wearing it daily and is becoming my signature scent. Excellent price on Fragrancex [...]

A classic old favourite
I thought this had been discontinued as it's nearly impossible to buy in the UK. It is a distinctive smell but not overpowering. It lasts well and the nose doesn't deteriorate over the course of a day. I use it for work as it is subtle and I think a classic scent.

Finding this classic at FragX. was a dream which came true. Since 1960s I lived without it, thinking it was discontinued and moving into the years of new designers like ESL and others, Balmain faded with time. Within me however, often visited again and surfaced in thoughts associated with my younger years at prime. Opening the bottle and spraying it on; now after so long, I felt time travel and vitality to when I was 28, fifty years ago! I closed my eyes as I held the perfume close to my heart, and felt a very intense orgasim.

Memorable !
I wore this classic and different perfume on my honeymoon in 1959, but for many years afterward was unable to locate it. Thanks to the internet and this website I rediscovered it a few years ago- sprayed some on my wrist and asked my husband if he remembered - he smiled, and said yes, he did ! This year should have been our 50th- sadly he didn't quite make it- but wearing this memorable and unique fragrance always brings me happy memories !

One day recently, on a whim I decided to search the web for "discontinued fragrances" in hopes of finding my all-time favorite perfume, Jolie Madame. In the late 70's, it was discontinued. It was such a unique fragrance, and the only one I wore, that I was more than a little disappointed I could no longer obtain it. A really lovely perfume
I have been searching for this perfume but could not find it in any of the stores. It was great to find that you stocked it. I have received many compliments on wearing it and would certainly recommend this perfume which has a truly distinctive scent, far superior to most of the modern perfumes.

Lovely chypre
Very lovely floral-chypre. Reminds me Bandit, but is much more subtle and smooth. Very earthy, when You smell close. One of the best scents I have used.

Favorite since the late '50s
A "wealthy" cousin introduced JM to me in the late '50s - immediately loved it and always have. Have searched retail for it many times. Thank you internet. Wish hand lotion, etc. were available.

I have been wearing this perfume since my 16th birthday in 1960. It is as beautiful a fragrance todays as it was the first time I wore it. I have tried others but always come back to Jolie Madam
