Oscar de la Renta studied painting in Spain while at Madrid Academy of San Fernando. It was here he first discovered his appreciation for fashion design, and shortly after, he was able to sketch designs for various brand houses. Before he launched his own fashion house, he worked for numerous other people in the industry, including Cristobal Balenciaga and Elizabeth Arden. In 1965, he created his own brand, and it was not long until he was winning industry awards. In both 1967 and 1968, his fashion house earned Coty American Fashion Critics’ Awards.
