While it may seem arbitrary, fragrance sensitivity is a real condition that millions of people live with every day. Unfortunately for them, fragrance can be found almost everywhere, from traditional perfumes and air fresheners to cleaning products and even advertising inserts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect you or someone you know might have a fragrance sensitivity, read on. We\u2019ll cover how to recognize the symptoms and how sensitive people can limit their exposure to fragrances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is Fragrance Sensitivity (Perfume Allergy)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragrance sensitivity is when an individual displays signs of irritiation or an allergic reaction due ingredients or chemicals in fragrances. Common symptoms can be categorized into nasal (sneezing, itchy eyes, asthma, headaches) and skin reactions (itching, burning, redness).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since fragrance is used in so many household items, exposure can be constantly occurring and usually increases when much time is spent indoors. There are two types of perfume allergy sensitivity \u2014 respiratory and skin. The frequency and level of sensitivity can differ from one person to another. Scent can be found everywhere, and those who are exposed to these allergens daily can see increased symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have seasonal allergies are more likely to develop fragrance sensitivities due to their baseline allergic disease. With more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/allergies\/allergies-101\/facts-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffering from allergies each year, these fragrance sensitivities are becoming more common.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination of allergy-afflicted Americans and the increasing presence of fragrance and chemicals available to the public means that more and more people are seeing the impacts of fragrance sensitivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragrance Sensitivity in the Workplace<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to fragrance has become a hot-button issue in the workplace. As more and more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5865484\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experiencing symptoms, people have begun to debate whether or not workplaces should be required to limit fragrance usage to accommodate sensitivities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal courts have ruled that an allergy to scents can be considered a disability <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/publications\/ada-your-responsibilities-employer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under ADAAA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the most recent amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act). Under this law, when an employee has a severe reaction to exposure to an odor or scent their employer must act on their behalf to remedy the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An employee who is experiencing debilitating symptoms like asthma, breathing difficulties or an itchy, inflamed rash has the right to request a safe workplace. Their employer is required to take steps to ensure their work area is free of scents. You can be more cognizant of what you buy, and there are also certain medications that those who are affected can take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If symptoms are respiratory-focused, purchase nasal antihistamines and nasal corticosteroid medications to control the allergy symptoms. These are much like what you would purchase for seasonal allergies or allergies to dander.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to keep all fragrances off of your body and out of your immediate environment. Many everyday products can contain scent. These products may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soaps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fabric softeners<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laundry detergents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin care products<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cosmetics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air freshener<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Room spray<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scented candles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning and deodorizing products<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Buy Fragrance-Free Products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since fragrance allergies are becoming so common, many companies are opting to offer fragrance-free products. However, their packaging can be confusing to some. Here\u2019s a list of resources to help you find the right products.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Find EPA Safer Choice-certified products:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency created a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/saferchoice\/learn-about-safer-choice-label\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safer Choice label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help people identify products that have safer chemical or natural ingredients. Products that are free of chemical scents are marked \u201cfragrance-free\u201d in the upper left-hand corner of the label.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Read the EWG guides:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Environmental Working Group has provided an extensive online database where you can look up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/cleaners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy cleaners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/skindeep\/#.Wqark2aZN3k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal care products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We recommend looking at the ingredients provided to see if fragrances are listed in the products that you use.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Look for MADESAFE certified products:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MADESAFE has put together a list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/madesafe.org\/pages\/categories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certified fragrance-free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and allergen-free products.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-544\" src=\"https:\/\/img.fragrancex.com\/images\/blog\/fragrance-sensitivity_4-safer-choice-label.png\" alt=\"illustrated zoom in of the safer-choice label\" width=\"3083\" height=\"1750\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragrance-free vs. Unscented<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that many products can call themselves \u201cfragrance-free\u201d if the word \u201cfragrance\u201d doesn\u2019t appear on the products ingredient label? This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that no scented additives have been added to the product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To determine if a product is truly unscented, look to see if you see essential oils or fruit\/flower distillate waters on the ingredient label. If you see these, the product is scented and it can cause an allergic reaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other companies may use chemicals to mask scents so that your product will smell like \u201cnothing\u201d. These will claim to be fragrance-free but many people will have reactions to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/secret-scents-the-hidden_b_2907073\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many people love wearing their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fragrancex.com\/shopping\/type\/perfume\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favorite perfume<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily, it\u2019s important to be courteous to those who may be struggling with any sensitivities. While you can\u2019t control everything you expose the people around you to, perfume and cologne are things that are easy to monitor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragrance sensitivity can vary among individuals, and those who have more severe allergies should be treated with care.
