St. Johns Bay Rum got its start officially in 1838 when Albert Heinrich Riise, a Danish chemist, discovered he could create an incredible scent by mixing Virgin Island rums with bay leaf oils from St. John. His creation earned him the Centennial Medal in 1876, and he earned numerous other distinctions in Chicago and New Orleans. Today, the company is owned by a group of private investors.
