Etienne de Swardt founded Etat Libre D’Orange (“The Orange Free State”) with the intent to launch novel and borderline controversial compositions. Dissatisfied with traditional perfumery, de Swardt built the brand on the concept of revolution against the industry standards, from the name taken from a sovereign republic in South Africa to the three-colored rosette on every bottle. The brand’s works - all unisex fragrances - were made in collaboration with various perfumers and a number of celebrities from Tilda Swinton to the Sex Pistols.
