His style has always been masculine and his first fragrance (simply called
John Varvatos) evokes that masculinity. This is a woody
vanilla fragrance with a slightly sweet scent. The hidden detail is dates. Very masculine, luxurious and a bit spicy and as to dry down, it takes a leathery turn for a stunning finish.

Interestingly, nearly all twenty of the John Varvatos fragrances released incorporate the element of leather (as both John Varvatos and the brand’s perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux love to wear leather jackets!)
2009’s
John Varvatos Artisan, was the fourth (after a women’s fragrance John Varvatos dedicated to his wife) and is still one of the most popular fragrances in the line. Mr. Varvatos wanted to add a scent unique to the collection that would evoke the feeling of escaping the city in a convertible and trading your leather jacket for a fresh, white cotton shirt. 2017’s
John Varvatos Artisan Pure is another example of this new, fresh outdoorsy direction as is 2016’s
Artisan Blu, which is a vibrant aromatic and
aquatic scent with fresh citruses.

John Varvatos jv x Nick Jonas was his first celebrity / client collaboration in 2018 which continues through 2021. It was not composed by Rodrigo Flores-Roux but by perfumer Harry Fremont (the perfumer who created the renowned
CK One). Still, it has that urban flair.
