Bernard Mitchell founded Jovan Inc. in 1966. He chose "Jovan" because it sounded similar to the names of two rival companies, Revlon and Avon. It was sold to the Beecham Group in 1979 and later became part of Coty Inc. Jovan's groundbreaking advertisements helped it stand out from the competition.
