Perry Ellis, a native of Portsmouth Virginia, graduated from the College of William and Mary with a bachelor’s degree in business studies. After obtaining his masters in retailing from New York University, Ellis moved back to Virginia and worked at Miller Rhodes department store in Richmond from 1963 to 1967. In 1975 he launched his first label, Portfolio, and three years later founded Perry Ellis Sportswear. He went on to start his own company in 1980, and by 1986 revenues totaled $250 million.
