French designer Pierre Cardin learned fashion design and construction as a young apprentice to a clothier, then made women’s suits for a tailor. He moved to Paris in 1945, working for Jeanne Paquin, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Christian Dior before founding his own fashion house in 1950. Known for his haute couture in the 1950s, he shifted to ready-to-wear in the 1960s and began branding his garments with his own logo.
